Arsenal have confirmed the Bosman signing of Switzerland captain Stephan Lichtsteiner. The 34-year-old is expected to formally join the club following the conclusion of his Juventus contract this month.
Earlier this week, Lichtsteiner dismissed suggestions that he had agreed on a move to the Emirates Stadium despite making the visit to the Gunners training ground on Friday.
However, the Gunners have made an official statement confirming his arrival and the right-back will wear the number 12 shirt, formerly worn by France international Olivier Giroud.
Lichtsteiner’s arrival may not significantly improve the Gunners on the playing field but the Swiss is sure to provide valuable pieces of advice of Hector Bellerin to improve his game.
Moreover, the Swiss is technically much better in the defensive sense than the Spaniard and his experience could come of use in the big games, especially on the road.
Lichtsteiner becomes Unai Emery’s first signing as the Gunners boss and the Swiss’ arrival is only the beginning of what could be a summer of change at the Emirates.
The Capital outfit are also close to sealing their second signing of the summer transfer window with Sokratis Papastathopoulos due to join from Borussia Dortmund in the next few days.
