Arsenal’s hierarchy are reportedly prepared to back manager Unai Emery, should he decide to bench Mesut Ozil for the forthcoming games. The former Germany international has looked out of sorts since the start of the campaign and he was supposedly being fancied to be dropped for the West Ham United game last weekend before suffering from an illness.
According to The Telegraph, Emery is keen to avoid a repeat from his Paris Saint-Germain days where record signing Neymar had the authority over him. Over the years, Ozil has been given special importance when compared to other players at the Emirates Stadium but Emery does not seem to favour a similar logic, unless the German can be consistent on the field.
As such, the Spaniard is considering the prospect of benching the midfielder for the coming matches and The Telegraph reports that he would have the full support from the board irrespective of the response among the club’s faithful.
Since taking charge of Arsenal, Emery has not had second thoughts over his decision-making and once of those involved Jack Wilshere, who left the Gunners on a free transfer after he was not assured of regular gametime.
The 46-year-old has since benched fan favourite Aaron Ramsey for the Chelsea game after he had a sub-par performance versus Manchester City, but given the Welshman’s dedication, he managed to win over the manager during the recent triumph over West Ham.
At present, both Ramsey and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have excelled under Emery’s guidance and the upcoming trip to Cardiff City may witness Ozil start from the bench, now that he has returned to training.
Aside from this, Emery may decide to hand starts for Lucas Torreira and Alexandre Lacazette in the expense of Mateo Guendouzi and Alex Iwobi with the duo being impressive with their substitute outings since the start of the campaign.
