Arsenal head coach Arsene Wenger has confirmed that the Gunners have plenty of injury concerns ahead of tomorrow’s League Cup semi-final first leg against London rivals Chelsea. The Gunners are contesting their cross-town rivals for the second time in just over a week after recently playing out a 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Wenger acknowledged that both Granit Xhaka and Shkodran Mustafi are doubtful for the League Cup semi-final and they may require a late fitness test to make the game.
Aside from this, there are further concerns with Olivier Giroud, Aaron Ramsey, Laurent Koscielny, Sead Kolasinac and Nacho Monreal sidelined for the encounter and Wenger has confirmed they may only return after a couple of days after the midweek League Cup game.
Wenger recently gambled with a weakened lineup during the FA Cup meeting versus Nottingham Forest and this eventually backfired as they were ousted from the tournament after an embarrassing 4-2 defeat on the road.
As such, the current injury crisis may not have come at a worser time for the Gunners and the French tactician has his task cut short to secure a positive from the first leg of the Cup semi-final at Stamford Bridge.
The Gunners have fared well against their London counterparts of late where they have accumulated a four-match unbeaten streak but they need to produce a much better performance than the recent showing at the Emirates, where they were lucky with the scoreline.
Blues striker Alvaro Morata could have easily scored a hat-trick on any other day but his recent form and some good shot-stopping from Petr Cech ensured that the Gunners secured a hard-fought league point on the night.
