Spanish heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly considering a surprise move for Manchester United’s Luke Shaw at the end of the campaign. The England international has struggled to make himself a regular under the tutelage of Jose Mourinho, and his United future has been put under question beyond the summer.
According to The Mirror, the Blaugrana could make an attempt to secure Shaw’s signature during the summer transfer window with Lucas Digne due to be shown the exit door at the end of the season. The France international has struggled to offer regular competition to Jordi Alba on the left side of the defence, and the Catalan giants are seemingly prepared to replace him due to his urge for regular gametime.
Meanwhile, the publication suggests that Bayern Munich’s David Alaba is the prime target to fulfil the void, but the Blaugrana have decided against the move, knowing of the reported interest from Real Madrid, who could force them into a bidding battle, which would increase the player’s transfer valuation.
Shaw was regarded as one of the most promising left-backs in England during his initial career with Southampton, and his performances at the south Coast earned him a spot with the Three Lions for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Shortly after the global tournament, the 22-year-old bagged himself an Old Trafford move under the guidance of former boss Louis van Gaal, but he has since struggled to secure a regular spot with a double leg-break hampering his progress along the way.
With just 15 months left on his contract, Shaw appears to have made his mind up for a fresh challenge after being publicly criticised by Mourinho once more. Shaw is reported to be aware of the transfer interest from the La Liga leaders, but it will be interesting to see whether he can cope with their style of play, which is possession-based and involves different ranges of passing.
