Spanish heavyweights Barcelona are understood to be weighing up a summer approach to sign Manchester United forward Anthony Martial. The France international has managed just three Premier League starts since Alexis Sanchez’s arrival at Old Trafford and this has spread speculation over his long-term future with the Mancunian giants.
According to The Mail, the Blaugrana have apparently joined the pursuit of the 22-year-old after missing out on his signature during the previous summer transfer window. The Catalan outfit were obviously keen on Martial’s services after parting ways with Neymar in a world-record deal but they eventually settled for the signing of Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund instead.
As per the report, Ernesto Valverde’s side could be willing to part with a £60m sum for the attacker who has fallen out-of-favour under Jose Mourinho in recent months. The Frenchman has earned just 32 minutes of Premier League football since March and this could entice United’s hierarchy into a proposed sale, given the Frenchman has just 14 months remaining on his existing contract.
Despite this, Martial could yet revive his United future with Mourinho planning to offer opportunities to his fringe players during the midweek Premier League game against Bournemouth. United produced a rather abysmal performance in the 1-0 home defeat to West Bromwich Albion last weekend and the Portuguese manager has since highlighted that no outfield player is assured of a starting spot in the FA Cup semi-final.
Martial is more than capable of producing a barnstorming performance on his day but the Frenchman has still come for criticism for his lack of consistency which has often cost him an extended run of matches. The 22-year-old is currently enjoying his best season in the United shirt with 11 goals and a further 10 assists in 42 appearances for the club.
