Barcelona midfielder attracting interest amid restricted gametime

Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez is reportedly attracting interest from Europe’s elite after struggling to establish himself with the Blaugrana since rejoining them from Villareal last year.

The Spaniard was re-signed after a good season with Villareal during the 2016/17 campaign but he has since failed to secure a regular role under the guidance of Ernesto Valverde.

Suarez made 18 league appearances – mostly off the bench – during his return to the club last season but the current campaign has paved much differently to his personal liking.

The former Manchester City youngster has yet to make a La Liga appearance since the season started and his appearances have been solely restricted to the Copa del Rey matches.

As such, Marca suggests that the 24-year-old is no longer ‘an option’ for the Blaugrana and he could be free to pursue a fresh challenge elsewhere when the transfer window reopens this winter,

The publication indicates that Valencia, Chelsea and Napoli are among the prime candidates to sign him and the former could be a favourable option with the player getting the chance to reunite with ex-Villareal boss Marcelino.

Meanwhile, Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri is another keen admirer having kept tabs on the midfielder since his time at Napoli, though the Blues can anticipate competition from the Italian’s former employers.

Suarez was completely ignored from the matchday squad for the recent Champions League game at Inter Milan with rookie midfielder Carlos Alena getting the nod ahead of him.

He could, however, make a return for the La Liga game against Real Betis this weekend, though chances of him featuring remain distant unless the Blaugrana find themselves in a comfortable position.

Barcelona are currently at the top of the La Liga standings with a four-point gap to second-placed Sevilla. They come into the weekend game on the back on a 1-1 Champions League draw at Inter Milan on Wednesday night.
