Premier League giants Chelsea could sanction the surprise departure of Marcos Alonso to Atletico Madrid this month, should the Europa League holders match their £54m valuation for the Spaniard.
Alonso, 27, made the surprise switch to the Blues from Fiorentina during the summer of 2016 and he has since adjusted tremendously to become their undisputed choice on the left side of the defence.
As such, he has been linked with plenty of high-profile clubs including Barcelona and Real Madrid but according to AS, Atleti could potentially make a move for his signature before the Spanish transfer deadline on August 31.
At present, Diego Simeone’s side are comfortably placed with Lucas Hernandez and Felipe Luis offering options at left-back but they are concerns that the latter may leave the Spanish capital this month amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain.
Due to this, the Madrid giants have been associated with a move for Alonso in the transfer window but AS has contradicted its own claim by suggesting that the Blues are not eager to sanction his sale.
Alonso has made a strong start to the Premier League campaign under new boss Maurizio Sarri and he has already amassed a goal and an assist from the opening two games of the season.
With the English transfer window now closed, the Blues can no longer pursue a suitable replacement for Alonso and losing him would certainly hamper them, given Sarri may have to depend on either Emerson or Cesar Azpilicueta in a makeshift position to cover the absence.
