French attacker postpones Manchester United contract talks

France international Anthony Martial has reportedly stalled on a possible extension with Manchester United as he is keen to know what happens with Jose Mourinho in the forthcoming months.

According to The Sun, Martial has been in a contract standoff with the Red Devils since May and his stance is unlikely to change in the near future amid his reduced gametime under the current head coach.

Martial’s relationship with Mourinho deteriorated during the second half of the previous season whereby the arrival of Alexis Sanchez saw him regularly bench and he has since struggled to win over the Portuguese tactician.

Since February, Martial has not found the scoresheet for the Mancunian giants and during this period, his playing time has vastly reduced which has cost him a place with Didier Deschamps’s side for the World Cup as well as the ongoing Nations League games against Germany and Netherlands respectively.

As a result, the Frenchman appears prepared to bide his time to decide over a new contract but he could face the prospect of leaving the club next summer, should his stance remain the same.

Martial presently has around 10 months left on his current deal with the Manchester outfit and though the club have the option of a 12-month extension, they are keen to finalise a new contract before then.

At present, Mourinho continues to receive the complete support from the club’s hierarchy despite witnessing United secure just six points from the opening four matches but things could change, should the results not go in the positive direction.

If this becomes the case, Martial could give the green light to commit his long-term future to the club, given a previous report from The Times has suggested he would prefer to outlast Mourinho at the Theatre of Dreams.
