Arsenal have suffered a fresh injury blow with makeshift defender Ainsley Maitland-Niles likely to be sidelined for a couple of months. The England youth international picked up the injury during the first period of the season opener against Manchester City and he has now joined the likes of Sead Kolasinac, Laurent Koscielny and Carl Jenkinson in the treatment room.
According to Evening Standard, the 20-year-old is understood to have sustained a minor fracture of his left fibula and this should keep him out of action until mid-October at the least. With the Englishman’s absence, the Gunners are down to just one specialist in Nacho Monreal on the left side of the defence, given Sead Kolasinac is out for a similar time frame after picking up a knee injury in pre-season duty.
Aside from Nacho Monreal, summer signing Stephan Lichtsteiner can slot in a makeshift role after doing a credible job against the Citizens and it will be interesting to see as to which player Unai Emery picks for the Chelsea game this weekend, given the former has only recently returned to training after recovering from a minor knee problem of his own.
Arsenal started their new era under Emery with a rather underwhelming 2-0 defeat to Manchester City, but the Spaniard will expect the team to show up better against the Blues after he stressed the need to apply more pressure on the opposition. The north Londoners have had the advantage over their cross-town rivals of late with three wins and three draws from their previous six competitive encounters.
