Liverpool are expected to cope without Joel Matip in the coming weeks after the defender sustained a muscular injury during the 3-1 friendly defeat to Borussia Dortmund.
The Cameroon international lasted for just 22 minutes of the International Champions Cup clash before being replaced by Joe Gomez, who is making an injury comeback of his own.
Earlier on Sunday, Jurgen Klopp admitted that he is slightly worried about Matip after he experienced a small tear on his leg but the club’s official website has now confirmed that the injury should only keep him out for the short-term.
As per the statement, Matip has been ruled out for the remaining International Champions Cup games against Manchester City and Manchester United and he is expected to make the return to the Reds’ Melwood training ground to continue with his rehabilitation.
Liverpool have had concerns with the central defensive department over the past few seasons and Matip’s recent run of injuries are sure to be a concern, considering Klopp is eyeing a title tilt during the upcoming campaign.
The Reds are currently down to three recognised centre-backs in Virgil van Dijk, Ragnar Klavan and Joe Gomez for the remainder of their Unites States tour and Klopp may seek to offer particular care to the latter, who has had his own history of long-term setbacks.
Dejan Lovren is the other senior central defender within the club’s ranks but he should report late for first-team duties after his exploits for Croatia at the World Cup, where they ended with the silver medal behind France.
