Barcelona frontman Ousmane Dembele has sustained a fresh injury during the 4-2 comeback triumph over Real Sociedad on Sunday. The Frenchman suffered a ‘fibrillar rupture to his left thigh’ during the final minutes of the La Liga game and this is likely to rule him out for the best part of one month, according to Marca.
Dembele was pursued by Barcelona during the summer with the purpose of succeeding Neymar on the left-wing but he has since found little success over his injury record. Since arriving from Borussia Dortmund, the attacker has managed just four matches across all competitions and much of this resulted from a hamstring problem which restricted his participation between September and December.
With another month’s layoff with a thigh problem, Dembele could probably find himself dropping down the pecking order once club-record signing Philippe Coutinho recovers from a similar injury of his own. On paper, Coutinho is probably the preferred pick to slot into the left side of the attack and Dembele’s recent fitness issues could see him restricted to a bench role unless Ernesto Valverde thinks otherwise.
During his time at Liverpool, Coutinho found some good success whilst playing in a central attacking role and this could turn into his future position at the Camp Nou, considering Andres Iniesta has entered the twilight of his professional playing career. Barcelona continued their unbeaten league run last weekend after they came from a two-goal deficit against Real Sociedad at half-time to seal a 4-2 triumph.
