Serie A holders Juventus are reportedly monitoring the proceedings of Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku as they seek to pursue a long-term replacement for Mario Mandzukic.
Mandzukic has been a decent performer for the Bianconeri over the past three-and-a-half seasons where he has contributed 43 goals but the club are still evaluating his future with him having already turned 32 earlier in the summer.
As such, the Turin giants are understood to be eyeing a lsuccessor and Calciomercato reports that Lukaku has been identified as the prime choice, given the 25-year-old would be able to serve the club for the long-term.
Lukaku enjoyed a fruitful first season with the Red Devils last term where he contributed 27 goals for the club across all competitions as they finished second in the Premier League while reaching the FA Cup final.
However, the Belgian has failed to replicate the form this time around with just six goals through the first half of the campaign and during this period, there have been occasions where he has been dropped by manager Jose Mourinho.
Nonetheless, there does not seem any desire from the United hierarchy to part ways with the Belgian, who remains the club’s sole genuine centre-forward and his fortunes may change during the second half of the season, now that Mourinho is no longer at the helm.
Mourinho had regularly adopted a defensive-minded approach to Premier League matches which often left Lukaku isolated upfront despite his impressive hold-up play, but things should change under interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The United favourite was renowned for his fearlessness and ability to take shots whenever offered the chance and he could instill a similar belief into the club’s frontline for the rest of the season.
