Italian heavyweights Juventus are reportedly weighing up a temporary move for Matteo Darmian before the conclusion of the winter transfer window. The Italy international has been on the periphery of the Manchester United first-team this term with Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young commanding the right and left-back positions respectively.
According to The Sun, the Bianconeri are planning a move for the versatile defender, who made his first United start of 2018 against Yeovil Town (FA Cup fourth round) on Friday night. The report adds that the Bianconeri would prefer a short-term loan for Darmian with an obligation to buy, though United would only settle for a straight cash agreement.
Darmian showed plenty of promise for United during the backend of their Europa League campaign last term and many felt that he could establish himself as the regular during the 2017/18 season.
However, he has since found competition from the likes of Daley Blind, Luke Shaw and Ashley Young in the same role, and the latter has become the undisputed first-choice owing to his better application while going forward.
The former Torino man will be entering the final year of his United deal in July and the club could be prepared to stall his departure until then, should the Bianconeri fail to match their £26.5m valuation before the end of January.
Juventus are likely to lose the services of both Stephan Lichtsteiner and Kwadwo Asamoah when their contracts expire during the summer and this could enhance Darmian’s chances of featuring in the right-back spot especially with Mattia De Sciglio yet to make his mark.
