Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen on pursuing the signature of Marko Arnautovic from West Ham United when the transfer window reopens in just over a months’ time.
The Austria international had captured the attention of Mourinho’s team during the summer transfer window but the Red Devils showed no interest in making a formal approach for the versatile attacker.
However, with the club now facing the prospect of dropping from the top-four race, Mourinho appears keen on strengthening the strike force and that could lead to a move for Arnautovic, The Mirror claims.
Arnautovic’s brother and agent Danijel recently told Austrian newspaper Kurien that the attacker could pursue a fresh challenge in the New Year with the view of realising the dream of playing regular Champions League football.
However, the speculation was soon rebuffed by Arnautovic himself, who replied to an official Instagram post from West Ham United urging the supporters to not focus on the gossip regarding his future.
As such, it appears unlikely that Arnautovic would push through a mid-season departure from the Hammers but it remains to be seen whether the Hammers are tempted by the prospect of receiving a sum in excess of £50m from United at the turn of the year.
Arnautovic previously spent a loan stint with Mourinho at Inter Milan from FC Twente between 2009 and 2010 but the move did not go as planned with the Portuguese tactician citing that the attacker had ‘an attitude of a child’.
