Manchester United are reportedly making strides towards committing Anthony Martial to a new long-term contract. The France international presently has under nine months remaining on his deal with the Mancunian giants, though they have the option of triggering an extension clause which would prolong his stay until the end of the 2019/20 season.
According to Metro, the Red Devils have made good progress in terms of negotiating a new contract with the player’s representative and they are now confident of extending his stay for the next five seasons.
Martial has witnessed a mixed relationship with Jose Mourinho since the Portuguese took charge of the Red Devils in 2016 and during this period, there have been many occasions where the Frenchman has either been dropped or placed on the substitutes’ bench.
Despite this, he has managed to prove his credentials every now and then with key performances and his most recent contribution came during the 3-2 comeback triumph over Newcastle United where he scored his maiden Premier League goal since January.
As such, the board have also expressed their intent on keeping hold of the highly-rated attacker and they are now supposedly close to prolonging his contract following a good start to the current campaign.
Aside from Martial, United are also making progress towards extending the stay of England international Luke Shaw, who has shown glimpses of his old self since returning to Premier League action this term.
Shaw found himself on the periphery of the first-team last season with Ashley Young being the preferred choice for the left-back position but he has managed to swap roles this term after improving on his fitness through a vigorous training regime in Dubai before pre-season.
Like Martial, Shaw has less than a year remaining on his existing deal with the club, though the club do not have the luxury of a 12-month extension clause, having already triggered the option on his contract last winter.
