Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen on signing Jerome Boateng from Bayern Munich before the transfer window concludes on Thursday.
The Portuguese tactician has been desperate to pursue a new centre-back this summer but so far, the club have not found success with any of their transfer targets.
As such, The Guardian reports that Boateng has propped up Mourinho wishlist, though United are not prepared to pay over the roof for the Germany international.
As per the publication, Bayern are seeking to secure a sum between £45m to £53m for the former World Cup winner but this is something United remain reluctant to match.
United possessed the second-best Premier League defence behind only Manchester City last term but there were nevertheless negatives, considering there could not find a settled central defensive combination.
Phil Jones and Eric Bailly have unquestionably been the most-successful partnership among the existing bunch of players but the pair have sustained short-term injuries which has brought the need for enforced changes.
Based on this, Boateng appears a player whom United should pursue at the last resort, given the German has barely gone through an entire season with Bayern Munich without sustaining injuries.
Moreover, the German has been criticised for his reduced mobility for club and country over the past couple of seasons and he may not entirely cope with the intensity of the Premier League, considering he is approaching the wrong end of 30.
