Manchester United head coach Jose Mourinho has delivered a positive update on the future of David de Gea following the club’s Champions League encounter against Young Boys on Tuesday night.
The Red Devils were fancied to secure a routine victory despite their recent winless run in the Premier League and they had to work hard after the ineffectiveness on the attack front for vast parts of the game.
Marouane Fellaini was once more the headline-maker after scoring the winner in the 91st minute but De Gea likewise received appreciation after making a crucial fingertip save which was eventually key to their progress into the round of 16.
Speaking after the game (Sky Sports), Mourinho heaped praise on De Gea by citing that he is one of the world’s best shot-stoppers whilst suggesting that the club are not far off from competing him to a fresh deal.
The Spaniard presently has just eight months on his deal with the option of another year but Mourinho has indicated that there is no stumbling block through the player or his agent to dampen the contract negotiations.
De Gea had a rather shaky start during his debut term at United after joining from Atletico Madrid in 2011 but he has since improved his performance by the campaign and has won the club’s Player of the Year award in four of the previous five seasons.
He has continued in the same vein of form this term with the fifth most number of saves during the ongoing league campaign but United have still struggled with their backline leaking goals in the majority of their matches.
De Gea has been ever-present for United in the Premier League and Champions League this season and he should retain his position when the Red Devils make the trip to the South Coast to face Southampton in the top-flight this weekend.
