Premier League: Manchester United player ratings vs Leicester City

Manchester United managed to start the new Premier League season on a positive note as they secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Leicester City at Old Trafford. Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw found the scoresheet for United in either half before Jamie Vardy bagged an injury-time consolation goal for the visitors.

Player Ratings:

David de Gea – The Spaniard had a relatively quiet game between the sticks barring one moment where he called upon to make a match-defining save. He may need to replicate his form from last term if United are to contend for the title – 7

Luke Shaw – A solid display from the Englishman, who is presently fighting for his Manchester United future. Shaw produced a good performance on the defensive front and managed to score his first senior goal after taking a risk towards the end – 7

Victor Lindelof – The Swede looked comfortably alongside Eric Bailly at the heart of the defence. The supporters have been urging Mourinho to play the pair together and the Portuguese may have finally heed to their advice – 6.5

Eric Bailly – Unquestionably the best defender on the night. Whenever Lindelof found himself in a tricky situation, the Ivorian bailed him out and utilised his physique to outwit Kelechi Iheanacho – 7

Matteo Darmian – Certainly the weakness in the United defence. Darmian had a night to forget on the right side of the defence where he was constantly overlapped by Demarai Gray and the fans would surely want Antonio Valencia to return as soon as possible – 5

Andreas Pereira – The Brazilian continued his form from pre-season and providing quality distribution from the centre of the park. Made a couple of unforced errors from the holding midfield role but overall, he made a good impression after a much-awaited United start – 7

Paul Pogba – The man of the match by a fair distance. Pogba was United’s best performer on the night and he managed to dictate the play with ease and was flawless with his passing. He opened the scoresheet via the penalty spot – 8

Fred – A decent performance for the Brazilian, who got his first taste of competitive action in the United colours. The midfielder’s technicality was on display on the night but on occasions. he was guilty of giving up possession – 6

Juan Mata – Similarly to Fred, Mata could not find his passing range during the game but he more than made for it by assisting Shaw’s winning goal on the night. The Spaniard needs to better his game or else he could be benched – 6.5

Alexis Sanchez – The Chilean has unfortunately not improved from the backend of the previous season where he was guilty of constantly losing possession. Nevertheless, he got the assist for Pogba’s opener and should have got another, if not for Lukaku’s blatant miss – 6

Marcus Rashford – Rashford was offered a rare opportunity to lead the line with Romelu Lukaku still building up his match fitness. Physically, he could not compete with the presence of Maguire and Morgan on the night and he may need to improve on his facet of his game – 6
