Nations League preview: Germany vs France

Germany entertain World Cup champions France in the newly-formed Nations League on Thursday night. Joachim Loew’s side have come through a poor World Cup where they were ousted in the group phase and they have plenty to prove when they entertain Les Bleus at the Allianz Arena.

On the other hand, Didier Deschamps will be aiming for continuity from his squad after they went on to celebrate their second World Cup crown earlier in the summer. Les Bleus have dominated the proceedings against Die Mannschaft with just two defeats over the past three decades and they have the opportunity to continue their strong run in Munich tomorrow.

Players to watch for:

Leroy Sane – Germany: The young attacker has been recalled to Loew’s squad after an unexpected summer where he failed to make the cut for the World Cup. Since then, he has failed to make himself a regular with Manchester City and he comes into this game with the pressure to impress the national team boss. Sane has yet to find the scoresheet in 12 caps for Germany but he would surely want to make a point to Loew by standing out against the reigning champions.

Paul Pogba – France: The Frenchman has always remained the centre of attention whether playing for club or country. Pogba impressed for Les Bleus during the recent World Cup triumph where he scored one of the goals in the final against Croatia, but he has since returned to his old ways with Manchester United where he has only shown glimpses of his national team performance. As such, there remains the criticism regarding his consistency but he has more often than not turned up for Les Bleus.

Germany are likely to be under more pressure to deliver after going through a lean phase during the summer. Nonetheless, we are anticipating a high-scoring encounter with both sides not holding back on the attack. France may have won the summer World Cup but they do have the tendency to open up when they adopt an attack-minded style of play.
