Arsenal have the opportunity to avenge their League Cup final loss to Manchester City when they host them at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday night. The north Londoners were second-best during the Wembley showpiece on Sunday where their defensive organisation was poor and this eventually saw them succumb to a 3-0 defeat without much resistance.
The Gunners are presently 10 points behind a potential Champions League spot and the game against City is a must-win, if they are to hold any chances of making the elite competition via the league. On the other hand, Pep Guardiola’s side are comfortably placed with a 13-point lead at the top and victories in six of their remaining 11 matches would assure them of the title.
Players to watch for:
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Arsenal: The Gabon international has not done much in the Gunners shirt since arriving from Borussia Dortmund last month. Aubameyang bagged his maiden goal during a 5-1 rout of Everton but he has since remained fairly quiet, having yet to concern with the physicality of the English game. Nonetheless, he remains the Gunners’ go-to man with Alexandre Lacazette on the sidelines and the supporters will be expectant of a much better showing than the Cup final where he had a single attempt on target.
Sergio Aguero – Manchester City: The Argentine had not scored in a final of a competition for either City or Atletico Madrid but he managed to break this feat during the League Cup final. His sublime lob-goal over David Ospina ensured that he scored his 199th goal in the club’s colours and he will now fancy his chances of achieving the double century mark with the Gunners yet to keep a Premier League clean sheet in 2018. Aguero enjoys playing against Arsene Wenger’s side and has already netted eight times from his previous 13 meetings (transfermarkt).
