Burnley are at Turf Moor for Thursday’s league meeting against Chelsea. Sean Dyche’s side have picked up five league victories on the trot and this has propelled them to within two points off the sixth position which assures them a Europa League qualification spot.
In comparison, Chelsea put an end to a two-match winless run last weekend as they secured a stunning 3-2 comeback win over Southampton. With the victory, the west London side have jumped to within seven points off Tottenham Hotspur, who are occupying the final Champions League spot.
Players to watch for:
Chris Wood – Burnley: The New Zealand international made his comeback from a hamstring injury last month and his return has coincided with a purple patch for the Clarets. Wood netted the winner against Everton which ended Burnley’s 11-match winless league streak and they have since accumulated four more wins on the bounce. During this period, Wood has flourished with five goals for the Lancashire club – the majority of which have come during the second half of games.
Olivier Giroud – Chelsea: Giroud has been plying deputy to Alvaro Morata in recent weeks, but he should command a starting role at Turf Moor. The Frenchman was unquestionably the star of the show against Southampton last weekend as he spearheaded the Blues comeback with a match-winning brace. Antonio Conte’s side appeared to have no answers after falling 2-0 behind at St Mary’s but Giroud’s introduction paved way for a tremendous win which has surely made him a fan favourite – just like at ex-club Arsenal.
Burnley have not been as dominant at home when compared to their travels this season but they are still disciplined in the defensive department. The game could depend on how the teams fare in the attack front and the visitors may edge out the encounter.
