Premier League preview: Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur

Chelsea will seek to revive their top four prospects when they entertain London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League this weekend. The Blues are presently five points adrift of their cross-town counterparts. who are in the fourth position, and the derby is a potential must-win to maintain their Champions League ambitions for next season.

How the clubs have performed of late?

Chelsea have been in a poor run of form since the turn of the year with just six victories across all competitions. As a result, they have suffered disappointing exits in both the League Cup and Premier League, whilst their top four are also hanging on the line. Previous to the break, they beat Leicester City in the FA Cup quarter-final by a 2-1 scoreline. Alvaro Morata and Jamie Vardy netted in the first and second half respectively before Pedro popped up with the winner in added extra-time.

On the other hand, Tottenham’s form has been impressive since the turn of the year, and their only defeat during this period has come against Juventus in the Champions League round of 16 tie. Like Chelsea, their only prospects of winning silverware lie on the FA Cup, and they managed to progress to the last four of the competition after a 3-0 triumph at Swansea City.

Players to watch for:

Alvaro Morata – Chelsea: The Spain international has had a stop-start season with the Blues with injuries, fitness and a loss of form hampering his chances of making a regular impression. Morata had gone through 13 matches without scoring for the league holders, but he managed to end the streak prior to the break, where he found the net versus Leicester City. Morata was guilty of missing a clear-cut chance during the Blues’ 2-1 win at Wembley earlier in the campaign, and he will want to amends this weekend.

Son Heung-min – Tottenham: With Harry Kane doubtful for the derby, Son is likely to get the role of leading the line for the north London side. The South Korea international failed to find the scoresheet during Spurs’ Cup triumph over Swansea, but prior to that, he managed to notch seven goals in the space of just four matches (ESPN). During this period, the 25-year-old has contributed three braces, and he is currently just three goals shy of matching his previous season’s goal tally of 21.
