Manchester United will be aiming to end a four-match winless streak when they host Newcastle United in the Premier League this weekend. Jose Mourinho has been heavily criticised by the fans following the club’s worst start to the season in nearly 30 years and anything less than a win over Rafael Benitez’s side this weekend could potentially draw curtains on the Portuguese’s reign at Old Trafford.
What happened in the previous meeting?
The last encounter between the sides was at St James Park in February where United were on the wrong side of a 1-0 defeat. The Red Devils enjoyed nearly two-thirds of the possession during that game but they were eventually made to pay for their defensive errors with Matt Ritchie bagging the sole goal in the 65th minute.
Players to watch for:
Romelu Lukaku – Manchester United: During the previous campaign, Mourinho indicated that Lukaku is one of the key players in his squad who remains undroppable from the starting lineup and this has certainly remained the case in the current season. However, it could be said that the Belgian’s performances have not quite warranted him the position, given he has been guilty of missing several straightforward chances. The former Evertonian has bagged four goals already this term but he could have quite easily doubled his tally with the chances which were on offer. He is presently on a four-match goalless streak.
Salomon Rondon – Newcastle United: The Venezuelan has yet to find his feet with the Magpies this term and this has largely resulted from the fact that the team have often gone on the defensive. With an away game against the top-six, Benitez may once more prefer to go with a safety first approach but they are sure to test the opposition on the counter-attack where Rondon could come of importance. Unlike last term, United’s backline has been far from convincing with just one clean sheet in the top-flight, Rondon’s physical presence should certainly pose a question or two for the defence which has witnessed constant changes during the opening seven league matches.
The Magpies have sprung plenty of surprises against the elite clubs in the past but most of those results have come on their home turf. United should seal the three points, though we are anticipating the Magpies to score.
