European champions Real Madrid are reportedly keeping tabs on Anthony Martial, who is approaching the final year of his contract with Manchester United. The Frenchman has been in good form for the Red Devils this term, scoring 11 goals across all competitions (whoscored) but his long-term future with the club remains uncertain.
According to French station RMC Sport, the France international is said to be astonished by the ongoing developments with the Mancunian giants. Martial had sent his agent to discuss a new contract with the United board in December but to his surprise, the hierarchy dismissed the prospect of offering him an extension in the near future.
As such, the attacker has already been linked with long-term suitors in the form of Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan and Real Madrid’s name has now been thrown into the hat amid their plans to perform a major overhaul of their first-team squad in the summer.
Martial started the campaign as a regular from the bench but he slowly managed to win the confidence of the head coach with several impressive displays including the match-winner against Tottenham Hotspur in October.
Thereafter, the 22-year-old became the undisputed choice on the left wing for United until January where new signing Alexis Sanchez was rewarded with his position. Martial has since struggled to find similar success on the opposite flank and he has started the past two games from the bench.
As things stand, Martial has just 15 months left on his existing contract with Manchester United, but the club have the option of prolonging his stay by a further year by triggering an extension clause written into his deal.
