Spanish La Liga: Real Madrid player ratings vs Espanyol

Real Madrid returned to winning ways in the Spanish La Liga on Saturday as they picked up a close 1-0 triumph over Espanyol. The hosts were certainly the dominant side on the day with the better possession and opportunities but ultimately, the match was defined by a single goal scored from Marco Asensio.

Player Ratings – Real Madrid:

Thibaut Courtois — A second clean sheet on the bounce for the Belgium international when we consider the Champions League against Roma in midweek. His distribution was flawless and he was rarely challenged barring an effort from Borja which rattled off the crossbar – 6.5/10

Álvaro Odriozola — A memorable debut for the young Spaniard. The former Real Sociedad man impressed with his pace and made a number of dangerous runs. Had also a stable performance at the back which makes for a decent beginning – 7/10

Raphael Varane — The World Cup winner was caught on a couple of occasions on the counter-attack but he was nonetheless stable with key interceptions. Had to cover more ground with Ramos tending to push further up the field – 6.5/10

Sergio Ramos — Ramos had a rather mixed performance against Espanyol where hie positional awareness was barely witnessed. He was responsible for the lead-up to Borja’s effort which ricocheted off the bar and besides this, he nearly found the net on the other end – 6/10

Nacho — The Spaniard was tasked with the job on the left side of the defence with Marcelo offered a break. Defensively he was solid as demanded but he could not make any impact in the attack despite several overlapping runs beyond Asensio – 6/10

Casemiro — A very good defensive showing from the Brazil international, who made a number of tackles including a last-ditch one which restricted Espanyol from taking the lead in the first half. He was also required to cover up for captain Ramos when he pushed forward – 7/10

Dani Ceballos — Looked really sharp with his distribution during the match and kept the ball under his control in crucial situations. Despite this, he was substituted following the hour mark with Lucas Vazquez coming on – 7/10

Luka Modric — Modric was once more effective in controlling the play in the centre of the park. He was indirectly involved in Asensio’s goal where his deflected attempt went into the Spaniard’s path to find the scoresheet – 7.5/10

Isco — Another robust performance from the Spaniard tonight. He was mesmerising on occasions with the ball at his feet and was probably unlucky to have not registered a goal or an assist during the game – 7.5/10

Karim Benzema — Benzema may have started the season on a strong note but the Espanyol game will certainly be one to forget. He barely provided a threat in the opposition ranks before Mariano Diaz came on following the hour mark with a better showing – 5/10

Marco Asensio — Could not receive much service from Nacho on the left flank with his compatriot more focused on attempting crosses into the box. He still had the drive and desire to challenge the defenders and fortunately, he was at the right place to bag the winner – 7.5/10
