Spanish midfielder evaluating his future with Manchester United

Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera could reportedly push for a winter exit from Old Trafford amid the uncertainty surrounding his contract situation with the club.

The 28-year-old had hoped that he would receive a contract extension before entering the final year of his contract but so far, the club have not shown any intent on prolonging his stay.

According to Metro, the Spaniard is keen on extending his deal with the Mancunian giants but the club’s reluctance to do so may witness him pursue a fresh challenge in the New Year.

Herrera has been a valuable squad player under the guidance of Jose Mourinho over the past two seasons but his gametime has reduced with the signings of Nemanja Matic and Fred.

Nonetheless, the Spaniard has not expressed any discontent over his playing time but Metro suggests that the midfielder may leave Old Trafford in January, should the side take his patience for granted.

At present, the versatile midfielder has just 10 months left on his existing deal with the Red Devils and there has not been any movement in terms of committing him to a long-term contract.

United boss Jose Mourinho has spoken positively over Herrera’s impact in the past but the Portuguese is unlikely to have any part to play in the negotiations in the coming months.

In a recent interview, the manager affirmed that executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has been placed in charge of handling the contract renewals and it will be interesting to see whether the club are able to find a breakthrough with Herrera before the turn of the year.

Herrera was in-and-out of the lineup during the previous campaign and he ended up making just 13 league starts. The current season appears to have begun on the same scale with just one start in an unfamiliar central defensive role after the first four matches.
