Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that the first-team trio of Jesse Lingard, Nemanja Matic and Antonio Valencia are unlikely to make the Premier League clash against Brighton & Hove Albion.
In a report covered by the club’s website, the Portuguese tactician indicated that the trio have participated in the training session leading up to the weekend encounter but they are unlikely to be deemed fit enough to feature against the Seagulls.
While Lingard missed the season opener against Leicester City due to his restricted fitness, Valencia and Matic have, however, been on the recovery path from a calf and abdominal injury respectively.
Aside from the trio, Sergio Romero, Diogo Dalot (both knee), Ander Herrera (hamstring) and Marcos Rojo (unknown knock) are also certain to miss the trip to the south Coast with none of them having reported to training since the start of the campaign.
United were far from impressive during their season opener against Leicester City where they appeared to go into a shell after picking up the lead but they nevertheless scrapped through a 2-1 victory on the night.
On Sunday, Mourinho’s side are scheduled to contest against Brighton & Hove Albion in their second league game and they should be up for revenge after suffering a shock 1-0 defeat at the Falmer Stadium last time around.
On that occasion, Pascal Gross scored the only goal of the game in a match where Marcus Rashford struggled to lead the line for United, but things should pave differently this weekend with Romelu Lukaku expected to make his first league start since April, where his season was summed up by an ankle injury.
