Two things we learned: Real Madrid 1-3 Juventus

Real Madrid sealed their eighth successive semi-final appearance in the Champions League as they clinched a 4-3 aggregate victory over Juventus. Los Blancos secured a comfortable 3-0 win during their first leg played in Turin but they were made to sweat to make the final four of the competition. The Bianconeri came from three goals down to level the scores at the Bernabeu but a last-gasp Cristiano Ronaldo goal via the penalty spot sealed the tie.

Two things we learned:

Cristiano Ronaldo maintains his scoring run: The Portuguese superstar struggled to make the most of his goalscoring opportunities on the night but he nevertheless scored the goal which secured Los Blancos’ progress. Ronaldo converted a 97th minute penalty shortly after Gianluigi Buffon was sent off and this saw him score for the 11 straight Champions League outing – a run which now stretches to the 2017 final against the same opposition.

Gianluigi Buffon’s final Champions League bow : Buffon’s Champions League night ended in a sour note after being branded a red card for shoving referee Michael Oliver. The 40-year-old has previously hinted that he could retire from the game at the end of the season and should things turn this way, the Bernabeu outing may turn out as his final appearance in European football.  The World Cup winner could join an elite group of players including Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who failed to celebrate Champions League glory during their careers.
